Synopsis: Delft, Holland, 1665. A shy young servant girl, Griet, is sent to work at the house of painter Johannes Vermeer. Her natural appreciation of his art leads him to value her help and even her companionship. He eventually decides to paint her portrait, and for this he makes her wear his wife's pearl earrings, hoping that his wife will not find out.
